Why I Choose Macaroons (over and over again)
French macaroons are my favourite dessert.
One could say I have fancy taste. I would choose macaroons over chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven any day of the week. But the truth is, it’s not about being “fancy”. It’s not about picking (and enjoying) one of the hardest desserts to make. Instead, I choose macaroons because of the memories associated with them. Here’s the story.
In 2015, I met one of my best friends while I was in treatment in New York for my eating disorder. We developed a beautiful, one-of-a-kind friendship, and saying goodbye ripped me apart. I remember sitting in the art room with her on the day of my discharge, playing Adele on the computer, and crying silently beside one another while we listened to music.
In early 2017, she came to visit me in Montreal. Spending five days with her outside of the hospital walls was by far one of the highlights of my adult life. We toured the city, had one too many drinks, and spent quality time building our friendship.
One day, we were shopping downtown, and we passed by a stand that was selling macaroons. We had both never had one before, and after some deliberation, we decided to buy one to share. We settled on pistachio, as we reminisced about how good the pistachio ice cream was in treatment.
Now, we only bought one, as sweets were still difficult to incorporate into our meal plans. But standing in the mall with her, sharing our pistachio macaroon, was a moment that I still remember (and smile about), even to this day.
I really love macaroons. But to be honest, one of the main reasons why I choose macaroons over and over again is that they are a reminder that I can accomplish difficult things. They are a reminder of the amazing time I spent with my best friend when she stayed with me last year. They are a reminder that there is hope, and that I am not alone in this fight.
One could say I have fancy taste. But for me, macaroons are so much more than that.
